RodjER interview: “I do not know whether I will stay on the roster or not or where I am going to play next”

Taras Bortnik had the chance to talk with HellRaiser’s Vladimir “RodjER” Nikogosyan yesterday, right after his team lost the upper bracket semifinals at Parimatch League against Virtus.pro. The interview covers what went wrong in that series, but RodjER was also open to talk about HR’s problems, what got fixed and what didn’t, how has the current online format for all tournaments impact the players’ morale and motivation, and hwo has the new patch changed the meta.

***

We are a couple of hours after your defeat against Virtus.pro in the Parimatch League, does it still sting?

There was a bit of a mess with the drafts. Plus, it was generally difficult to get back to the old regime. We were on vacation. Some were playing Dota, others weren’t.

The draft problems are directly related to the new patch?

The patch has an impact, yes. The drafting phases are changed and it’s unclear for us what’s the best way to approach the draft.

How did you spend your vacation, did you play Dota or did you take the time to fully relax?

I was resting and playing, if I may say so. I played a lot, but all in all, I rested more than I played.

Let’s talk about your series against Virtus.pro. In the second game you made a comeback, everything was fine, but in the first game there were some strange moments. First of all, why did you leave Spectre for VP?

We expected that Shadow Demon and Slardar would cause her a lot of problems, but probably something went wrong there. And then, we couldn’t find a solution to shut down the Spectre.

You played Chen in this first game and bought Helm of Dominator. Is it a habit or is it a really good item-choice now?

I just decided to give it a try, actually.

And how do you feel about it, summons are supposed to be weaker since the item does not provide aura regen anymore?

The thing is that we lost our tempo in that game. We started dying one by one, and Spectre was already overfarmed. And I thought I needed Helm of Dominator to have an extra creep. I thought it would be useful. I was farming a lot, I had a big networth, I thought I’d have time to buy Mekansm.

Let’s move to the third game. At some point, you were doing fine, Funn1k on Void Spirit had an extremely good start. What went wrong?

We lost the draft. We forgot about Razor. There wasn’t much time to think about what carry to pick, what to do. Originally we wanted to pick Sniper in support position, but we had to make Kunkka support because otherwise, he would have lost the mid lane to Razor. In addition, Razor destroys Troll Warlord, no matter what networth it has or in what stage of the game you are. Overall, it was very difficult for us, even though we played the lane stage well. Everything was already pretty clear for us right after the draft ended.

You are playing with gpk standing in for xannii in this tournament. Did you have time to do any training in this formula?

We played scrims for a couple of days with KHAN and some other smaller teams. We just played to remember how it is, because we hadn’t played together for three or four weeks.

credits: EPICENTER

What can you say about the new patch, what are the main changes? What has changed in the gameplay or for your position?

Tranquil Boots are cheaper now, which is nice. Smoke of Deceit is a lot cheaper; you can buy it early now. Tome of Knowledge is cheaper. That’s nice too. There are a lot of “little treats” for supports. Also, I noticed that we gain too much for kills. Way too much.

Since the creep wave can’t be pulled before the 5 minute mark anymore, should we expect trilanes to return?

Yes. I believe that trilanes will appear much more often in this patch. Again, the kill formula has been changed. Now we have more experience from kills and it’s a good idea to run trilanes and secure laning stage early kills. So, everything should be more active now.

Almost all players are now guild members, but you’re not. Why?

I left a guild recently. It doesn’t make sense. In the beginning, there was some interest, but now. it’s all boring. It doesn’t make sense.

You said in a rather recent interview that it’s hard for HellRaisers to work on mistakes and improve. Have you managed to deal with this problem in the meantime? Have you found a mutual understanding prior to the vacation?

Probably not. It’s all been left how it was.

HellRaisers took a vacation when most of the teams played tournaments. Now it’s the other way around, you are back and a lot of teams took some time off. What’s the plan for you guys in the immediate future, are you ready to play some tournaments now or will you work on your problems?

For now,  we will finish the Parimatch League. I can’t say more details. We don’t know how it’s going to be. We will probably take another break, but we already made some specific decisions with a “fresh mind” after our initial vacation. I do not know whether I will stay on the roster or not or where I am going to play next.

Did you think to take a longer break, not just two weeks, I’m asking because this season you had such a hard time.

A break… That’s how we went to Thailand with the guys for two or three weeks, yeah, you can do that if you are with friends and have a good time. Overall, I don’t think the break is going to be very long.

I can’t help asking you this. Aren’t the problems you talk about the result of your three months bootcamp?

Actually, it was different. Yes, there were problems, quarrels, screams, disagreements. But we had a psychologist working with us almost every day and helping us. We are stuck to another kind of a problem: some game moments are not solved and not corrected. It depends on people, on their personal qualities to push themselves to work harder and improve. As a team, we all helped each other, spoke out.

How do you take the Parimatch, is it a tournament that you have to play, or does it still have some value for you?

Of course, it has some value. There are good teams playing there, it is always interesting. Plus, it’s been a long time since we played competitive matches. I am tired of playing matchmaking. Official games are always nice to play, especially after such a long break.

I’m glad you feel that way.  What gives you this desire to win?

Dota is what I’ve been doing for my whole life. And it’s just that the competitive interest prevails.

Have you ever lost the “taste of victory”?

I probably did during the time with Virtus.pro. I haven’t had that feeling lately.

credits: EPICENTER

The current Virtus.pro line-up is definitely not that “golden five” we are used to from them. They are not in good shape right now.  You know these players firsthand, may I ask you what do you think is going on?

There are only Solo and Noone left from the old VP. I don’t know what kind of atmosphere they have on the team right now. Maybe it has to do with the loss of motivation because the tournaments are online. It’s not that big of a deal. Plus, they aren’t in a bootcamp right now. When I played at Virtus.pro, the bootcamp was a very important part. We talked about Dota, we came up with different things together, we bonded, we were doing “team-building” work in a way.  Maybe they will play better when we have LAN tournaments and Majors again.

You said that online tournaments can hurt your motivation to play. Was it happening to you?

We all had it. Almost all of us had diminished motivation because we know that the LANs are gone.

The seasonal goal of any Dota 2 player is to reach The International and perform well there. How much does the lack of TI affect your desire to play all the time, to train, etc.?

I personally have no issues. Some people say that The International is gonna be in the winter. Generally, it’s unlikely to be cancelled. The prize pool has grown pretty solidly. For me, the Dota is always about enjoying the process.

During this period, the online tournaments brought Europe and the CIS together. Was there any sense for you personally and for your team to play against European teams,  against Secret and all the other big European teams?

Of course. You feel the diversity. Europeans have a different meta in their heads, different priorities. You use your strategies in the CIS, and somewhere it works well. You use it against a European tier 1 team and they don’t care what you come up with. And you’re already reviewing your ideas a little bit, you draw conclusions. It’s definitely a good experience.

Moreover, putting regions in the same qualifiers would make a proper tournament just by itself. With strong performances and tough matches. I like the idea of it.

Your next matchup at Parimatch League is in the lower bracket against Team Unique. What are your thoughts going up against them with elimination on the line?

I haven’t been following them much, and we didn’t train with them. I will sit down, watch their replays, and study a little. I can’t say anything about them yet.

Fair enough. Thanks for your time and good luck in the tournament.

Nintendo in 2020 has been a non-event that could ruin the company

A reader is worried that Nintendo’s continued silence is coming at the worst possible time, given the imminent launch of the next generation.

With everyone getting excited about the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X at the moment I can’t help thinking there’s something we’ve forgotten… Nintendo. Now that coronavirus and 2020 being a complete disaster are concepts we’re all familiar with, I think we’ve kind of forgotten just how little Nintendo has done this year. They might as well not exist outside of Animal Crossing and I cannot see how that is healthy for them.

We are now getting up to one year without a non-specific Nintendo Direct that announces new games and Nintendo are now hinting that maybe they’re getting tired of the idea and are going to try new ways of introducing new games. (Really, like what? Short of coming round our house and telling us personally what solution is there that doesn’t involve some kind of video reveal?)

The end result of all this is that they haven’t announced a single major new game all year or released one outside Animal Crossing and the upcoming Paper Mario: The Origami King (I’m going to be generous and describe that one as major). Beyond that there’s nothing and, more importantly, no sign that there was ever meant to be anything, coronavirus or not. The plan for 2020 basically seems to have been: let’s pretend it doesn’t exist and just skip to 2021.

At what point they became aware they had nothing I have no idea. They certainly couldn’t have predicted Animal Crossing would blow up the way it has as it was never that big before, so from a planning of point of view they had even less than it currently seems. From their point of view their big plan was to release one second-tier game in March and then then a third-tier game in July and then absolutely nothing for the rest of the year. The same year that Microsoft and Sony launch their new consoles…

Now, some people will no doubt claim that doing and saying nothing is all part of some grand master plan to cope with the next gen but I think it’s pretty obvious it’s not. A next gen launch is almost always a disappointment in terms of games and having a critically-acclaimed title out on the Switch at Christmas would be the perfect way to take attention away and convince people that the Switch is still the place to be.

We can already see that the PlayStation 5’s launch line-up is not very interesting and while Microsoft does have Halo they’ve already said that’s the only first party game. Release Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2, or some other equivalent, at the same time and it’d be perfect for Nintendo. Especially if they’d already been reminding the public how great the Switch is with a series of other great games all through the year… So yeah, that didn’t happen.

Nintendo might as well have not existed in 2020. Their only major game was only as big as it was because of a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic that they couldn’t possibly have predicted and beyond that it feels like the whole company just took the year off and forget to even leave so much as the tea boy in charge.

I don’t even know how they come back from this. Are they suddenly going to start releasing a bunch of new games in 2021 and pretend that this big 12-month dead zone never happened? I bet they’re not suddenly going to have anything out early in the new year, so they’ll probably only just get into gear again as Microsoft and Sony do – which is the exact opposite of what they should’ve done.

Perhaps Breath Of The Wild 2 or something equally big will be out at Christmas, maybe they’re not sure because of the coronavirus, but they need something to remind people they still exist. A bunch of Super Mario remasters will get some attention but they’re not new games, they’re the exact opposite.

Nintendo could’ve used the poor quality of the next gen launch line-ups to its advantage, but all it’s done is provide Microsoft and Sony with an open goal and made itself irrelevant in terms of video game discussion for an entire year. Nobody’s talking about new Nintendo games because there are none to talk about.

They’ve been the comeback kings more times than I can remember but usually that’s because of some grand mistake they’ve made, like the Virtual Boy or Wii U. But this time Nintendo are not failing because of something they’ve done but because they’ve done nothing, and that’s not like them. I worry that the mistakes made in 2020 will reverberate for many years to come and will bring the success of the Switch to an early and undeserved end. And if they’re not careful, the whole company.

Why the Internet is wrong about The Last Of Us Part 2 – Reader’s Feature

A reader defends Naughty Dog’s controversial new game and argues that it is one of the best sequels ever made.

There has been a lot of backlash with regards to the follow-up to the multi-award winning The Last Of Us. I couldn’t disagree more with such opinions.

To start things off, I think that Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us Part 2 was, as they themselves put it, the most ambitious game (they’ve) ever made.

With some mild spoilers ahead, I find that Naughty Dog was able to work off of a game that surpassed almost every gaming milestone there is. And pulling that off alone is no small feat.

So, they made a few decisions that got a few people killed, which raised some eyebrows (mine included).

But in the grand scheme of things, provided you continue onward, you come to realise how justified each death really was. All you have to do is ask yourself, what would I do in his/her shoes? And most of the time, you’d find yourself saying, ‘The exact same thing’. Whether you wish to admit it or not.

And that’s the beauty of Naughty Dog, they’re all about forcing you to put yourself in the shoes of the character, good or bad, liked or disliked. The point is, life isn’t fair sometimes, so they show you just how true that statement is. And they do it by surprising you over and over again, albeit against your wishes at times. But again, when are you able to pick and choose the sour balls life throws at you? You’re not. So why should the game defining that very sentiment be any different? Well, it shouldn’t.

I’m not playing it to be satisfied at every turn and constantly overcome by smiles and happiness. No, I’m playing it to escape, to get into a gritty world that I have no control over and where my decisions are allowed to be wrong, where they’re allowed to be reckless; up to a point where the game sets you straight, not entirely, but enough that it allows you to enjoy your brief journey in this incredibly crafted world, with such a complex narrative driving it.

Which brings me to my next point: the narrative. Although most have complained about how affected they were by the narrative, I feel that once you’ve played it and gotten to the crux of the story, where your world is turned on its head, you’re given a well needed break. And without saying too much, it’s this ‘break’ that defines what Naughty Dog meant when they said that this is the most ambitious game they’ve ever made, because never have I been so compelled to hate somebody one moment, and then practically love them the next.

This is the power a good, nay, great storyteller has. To take what you perceive to be a hero or a villain, and switch their agenda, and that of the player’s, almost seamlessly. The ability to do that within one game, one world, and by taking one shot at it, is I say again, no small feat.

Now whether people agree with these decisions is their prerogative, but don’t say that these decisions were wrong, or that these decisions were bad. That’d be like saying that one’s life’s goals were wrong, or that their life’s work was bad. What you should say is that it wasn’t for you, but I, like millions of others I’m sure, find that it was definitely for me.

The best Hacks to use in Hyper Scape battle royale – Daily Esports

Hyper Scape takes the concept of battle royale and almost turns it upside down. Ubisoft Montreal managed to take certain mainstays of the genre and give them intriguing twists to provide a refreshing experience for players. Aspects like fusing weapons, in-game events, and more make Hyper Scape truly unique. However, one of the biggest innovations in the new FPS is the addition of Hacks. Similar to abilities from Apex Legends, Hacks can give you a real advantage if you know how to use them. Before that happens, though, you need to know which ones to pick up.

      The Hacks of Hyper Scape

Hacks are some of the most important utility in Hyper Scape. They can turn an engagement around, make movement easier, and allow you to gain control of the game. While some work better than others, all of the game’s Hacks are useful in their own way.

Of course, some will be more useful than others. Before we get into which ones you should use, let’s see every Hack that’s currently in Hyper Scape.

      • Invisibility
      • Mine
      • Armor
      • Ball
      • Slam
      • Wall
      • Reveal
      • Teleport
      • Heal

      Best of the best

In total, we have nine Hacks. However, in our initial playtime, we found that three really stand out from the rest. The first of these is Slam, which you can use in a variety of ways. Its primary use is being launched into the sky and coming down fast for a slam, which will damage nearby enemies. Slam is extremely helpful when trying to get out of a fight but can also be used for movement purposes.

The next Hack you should pick up over the others is Invisibility. Though it’s more beneficial after you level it up, Invisibility provides you with a quick escape or a surprise on unsuspecting enemies. Invisibility of any kind will always prove helpful in an FPS title, though.

Lastly, we recommend picking up Teleport if given the chance. Like Invisibility, it becomes even more overpowered after you level it up. However, even in its beginning state, Teleport is great for a multitude of reasons. You can use it to gain a height advantage, quickly disappear from a gunfight, or even run away from enemies if you’re carrying the Crown.

Those are the three Hacks we recommend picking up in Hyper Scape. Which are your favorites? Let us know, and keep up with Daily Esports for future Hyper Scape news and guides.

Twitch Issues A Statement On Allegations Against Streamers

Update 6/30: Amid all the recent Twitch bans over alleged abuse and misconduct within the streaming community, President Donald Trump’s Twitch account has also been suspended temporarily, with a Twitch spokesperson citing “hateful” material as the reason: “Hateful conduct is not allowed on Twitch. In line with our policies, President Trump’s channel has been issued a temporary suspension from Twitch for comments made on stream, and the offending content has been removed.” The ban points to a wider crackdown among Twitch and even other sites, like Reddit, against content that violates its terms of services. Reddit recently banned The_Donald forum, among thousands of others, after adjusting its hate speech policies.

Update 6/28: Following the promise earlier this week to begin handing out suspensions, Twitch has banned multiple Twitch streamers who have been accused of sexual abuse. In what appears to be a seemingly unrelated action, DrDisrespect has also been banned, but no reason has been publicly given. It appears the ban is permanent. However, he says he is not sure why the ban was handed out and has only tweeted a single time since his ban.

Update 6/24: Twitch has issued a new statement on the current investigations into Twitch streamers accused of sexual abuse and harassment. “We are reviewing each case that has come to light as quickly as possible while ensuring appropriate due diligence as we assess these serious allegations,” the statement reads. “We’ve prioritized the most severe cases and will begin issuing permanent suspensions in line with our findings immediately.”

A selection of Twitch streamers stopped streaming for 24 hours in protest of Twitch’s lack of movement on the issue. This includes Ray Fisher, who posted on his Twitter that he had been called racial slurs while playing games and wanted reform in the gaming community.

Twitch notes that they’re seeking more information in cases where the incident happened outside of a Twitch-related event, and in other cases they “will need to report the case to the proper authorities who are better placed to conduct a more thorough investigation.” They encourage anyone affected to use the confidential reporting tools on each streamer’s channel page.

“We’re also committed to continuing our efforts to make Twitch a safer environment with more tools to combat harassment and hate,” the statement continues. “We have work underway including a review of our Hateful Conduct and Harassment policies, enhanced offensive username detection, improvements to AutoMod and our Banned Words list, and other projects focused on reducing harassment and hateful conduct.”

“We acknowledge that we can’t singlehandedly tackle pervasive issues across the gaming and broader internet communities, but we take our responsibility as a service for our community seriously,” the statement continues. “We will continue to assess accusations against people affiliated with Twitch and explore ways Twitch can collaborate with other industry leaders on this important issue.”

New reports continue to come in against numerous Twitch streamers. At the time of writing, there is no acknowledgment of the accusations against many of Twitch’s streamers on the site’s front page.

      Original story follows.

It could no longer be said that gaming is having a #metoo moment, but rather an ongoing #metoo movement. Amid a new wave of allegations surfacing on social media, those who have previously named their abusers are now demanding to know why the platforms that host known abusers’ content have not acted to take them down–with Twitch at the center of the controversy.

With multiple tweets claiming that Twitch has been given information on how some of their big-name partners are using that platform to abuse women, and chosen not to act on it, streamers and fans called on Twitch and its CEO Emmett Shear to step up.

Shear has now shared an internal Twitch email sent on the subject, while Twitch has put out an official statement, but some don’t think the statement is enough.

Now, people are calling for a Twitch blackout to take place on Wednesday 24, asking streamers to stay off Twitch for 24 hours.

Others are going further by pledging to cancel their ongoing Twitch subs and donate to streamers directly, without giving Twitch money through subscriptions or bits.

While the movement is centered around allegations that Twitch partners and affiliates have used their position to abuse women, those involved are also concerned about the amount of racism, homophobia, and transphobia that often goes unchecked by big-name streamers.

In the past, Twitch has banned the accounts of streamers whose abuse has been investigated and charged by authorities, such as Thomas Cheung, who was arrested after an undercover sting in Atlanta to catch child predators. However these punishments haven’t always been strict across the board.

In December 2018, Australian streamer MrDeadMoth was arrested and charged with assault after appearing to attack his partner during a live Twitch stream. Despite the arrest, however, MrDeadMoth was initially only given a 14 day suspension from Twitch–which was later lengthened in response to community outcry.

Even as parts of the community call for a blackout, Twitch is no-doubt preparing for an influx of new streamers after Microsoft announced the end of Mixer. Twitch has extended the olive branch to streamers left without a platform, with a tweet addressing the Mixer community.

Halo Infinite Mega Bloks Set Isn't A Spoiler, Clarifies 343

Update: 343 community director Brian Jarrard has issued a statement on Twitter, saying that any products appearing now are “part of the road map” and wouldn’t spoil key game details. Mega Bloks products have often taken creative liberties with the Halo sets. This has become particularly true in more recent years as the brand began to exhaust existing game-accurate scenes for inspiration.

      The original story follows.

Halo Infinite has been teased by Microsoft for quite a while, but the game’s story may have been spoiled by an unlikely source: building toys. A Mega Bloks construction set includes a figure that could reveal plot details.

      Potential Halo Infinite spoilers follow.

Fans on the Gaming Rumors subreddit (via IGN) found an image from an upcoming Mega Bloks set that could spell doom for an existing character. A Brute enemy appears to be carrying the helmet of Jameson Locke, one of the heroes from Halo 5: Guardians. The Brute appears to be named Hyperious, and he could be a new Banished antagonist.

This isn’t necessarily a story spoiler. For one, Mega Bloks could be exercising some creative license to create new characters and reference existing ones. But even assuming Hyperious kills Locke and keeps his helmet as a grim trophy, that could be a part of the story that Microsoft and 343 plan to show in pre-release promotional materials, rather than a shocking twist in the game itself.

We know that Halo Infinite will be part of Microsoft’s first-party presentation planned for sometime this month. Though Microsoft hasn’t formally announced a date, we’ve seen reports indicating it could be coming on July 23. Microsoft is also planning a week-long period in which fans can download limited-time demos of games on Xbox One, as an at-home substitute for the E3 show floor experience. That will last from July 21-27.

Four Halo Infinite Mega Bloks construction sets are available to pre-order right now at Amazon, though it’s unclear when they release.

      • Pelican Inbound — $150
      • Warthog Rally — $30
      • Defense Point Showdown — $80
      • Skiff Intercept — $40

Drake Hollow Delayed To Undetermined Launch Date

Today brought word that Drake Hollow is pushing out from a planned launch on July 17. Unfortunately, the team was not able to offer a new date at this time, but is promising to share that news when it can.

The news came over Twitter from Molasses Flood studio director, Forrest Dowling, who couldn’t share clear details of why the delay is happening, but did share that the reasons “are technical, boring, complicated to explain, and all under NDA anyway.”

Drake Hollow is a cooperative village-builder with action elements, and includes both a sandbox mode and a more narrative-oriented campaign. The game is headed to Xbox One and PC. Developer The Molasses Flood previously created the well-receieved The Flame in the Flood.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Pirate Gulliver guide

Sometimes Gulliver, the seagull from Animal Crossing: New Horizons, will wash up on your island in pirate garb, rather than his usual sailor outfit.

Just like his usual sailor appearance, pirate Gulliver (or Gullivarrr) may wash up on your shore, needing help getting back to his crew. To help him out, you’ll need dive and grab a his communicator. Note that you’ll only need to find one communicator, as opposed to five communicator parts.

You’ll need a Wet Suit in order to swim in the ocean and find it. Just like when you dive for sea creatures, you’ll press Y to dive down to pick up objects bubbling in the ocean. While some of them will definitely be sea creatures, you’ll find the needed gadget eventually.

As a reward for helping him out, he’ll give you a set of fancy pirate furniture or clothing. Just like his other reward set, it’ll get mailed to you the next day after you help him.

His appearance seems to be random, as you can still get his sailor-outfitted self to appear on your island as well. If you’re itching to nab all his new goodies immediately, you can time travel until you see the bird on your shores.

It’s unknown if helping him when in his pirate suit counts towards the Golden Shovel unlock requirements.
