Malaysian Government Allocates Over $3.6M For Esports Development in Annual Budget

The Malaysian government allocated RM 15M ($3.6M USD) for the development of esports, as part of its annual budget – Bejanjawan 2021. This is the third year in a row that the government of Malaysia has set aside a dedicated sum for esports with RM 10M($2.4M)  and RM 20M($4.8M) being allocated in 2019 and 2020, respectively. 

The announcement was made by Finance Minister, Tengku Zafrul Tengku Aziz and the allocation is part of RM 55 million budget for high-performance sports such as hockey, rugby, badminton, and cycling, alongside the development of female athletes. While he did not reveal how the money would be utilized, we do know that it will be under the purview of the Ministry of Youth and Sports as it was revealed by Minister Reezal Merican Naina Merican.
