OG's Ceb talks about why he hates Dota 2 patch 7.26

Dota 2 patch 7.26 is in it’s last days. We know that as IceFrog revealed on the 16th of June that the next big game play overhaul would be in couple of weeks from then (so sometime in the coming week). This will be happy news for the community, but more so for OG’s former offlaner, Sebastian ‘Ceb’ Debs, who has mentioned time and again that he is not happy with the current patch. A few days ago, Ceb mentioned why he didn’t like patch 7.26 on stream. Here is a video of what he said:

Let’s talk about the major points the Ceb makes in the video.

(1) Mid laners get very little gold and XP if they leave the lane for kills

Yes, this is surely the case. However, this has been the case since Dota 2 patch 7.07, when early game kill XP was reduced. VPEsports even did an article how it is important to stay in lane two years ago, and that continues to be the case even today. The reason behind Ceb’s anger is understandable, as it makes the game a lot less exciting in the first few minutes, especially since all gold income was reduced by 10% in patch 7.26. There shouldn’t be an excessive reward for a mid to rotate and get kills, as all heroes do not have that ability early on in the game, but it should at least keep him/her on par with the opposition mid hero who might choose to stay in lane. Teams get more benefit just staying in lane and hitting creeps instead of playing aggressive in lane and getting kills.

(2) Getting the bad end of the deal for killing the opposition carry in lane

Ceb mentioned that getting a kill on the carry early on in the game is actually bad for him (he most probably means offlaner) as the gold and XP is low and in the end, the hero getting the kills has to ferry a lot of regen in the lane, which ends up balancing the scales.

(3) Necronomicon being a broken item

Ceb said the reason Necro books are broken is that it gives a lot of attributes that make it good for strength and agility heroes, besides being one of the-if not the-best item for solving mana issues in the early game. A few patches ago, quite a few items received a nerf for their mana regen. In such times, an item that is made of two Sage’s Masks definitely tends to stand out, at least in the early and mid game. The counter argument could be that both teams could make it, but not necessary that all heroes are good to build it and more importantly, it pushes more and more games in a particular direction of play without having a multitule of strategies possible.

It will be interesting to see if IceFrog has the same concerns on his mind as well and we will know soon when Dota 2 patch 7.27 rolls out. In terms of the meta, patch 7.26 definitely feels like one of the least interesting ones the game has seen in a while. The big overhaul hopefully addresses the issues at hand and makes Dota 2 the interesting and challenging game it is meant to be.
