After three decades in the wilderness 16-bit classic Turrican is returning to modern formats, with a full reveal promised at Gamescom.
Turrican is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and it has the best present fans could ever wish for: the announcement of a new game.
Well, it’s more of an announcement of an announcement, as the reveal trailer won’t debut until Gamescom tomorrow, 27 August. So all we know at the moment is that a new game is coming and original developer Factor 5 is making it.
To be honest, knowing that Factor 5 is still going is news in itself, as despite being one of the most technically accomplished developers of the 16-bit era – and right up to the GameCube days with Star Wars: Rogue Squadron – they had a run of bad luck starting with PlayStation 3 exclusive Lair and never really recovered as a games developer.
How much of the original team remains is unclear but Factor 5 also helped develop high-profile middleware technology such as MusyX and DivX, which led to them working with Epic Games on Unreal Engine and subsequently Fortnite.
It’s probably too much to hope that their return to game development will result in a new Rogue Squadron game but older fans will certainly remember Turrican, which worked like a more action-orientated version of Metroid.
Turrican was a major success on the Amiga and Atari ST, before also appearing on the Mega Drive, SNES, and other contemporary formats.
Despite plans for a PlayStation 3 revival the series never made it out of the 16-bit era, so it’s going to be interesting to see whether this is a 3D game or features the same 2D gameplay as the original games (we’re betting on the latter).
The new game will be revealed as part of the Gamescom Opening Night Live event, which starts at 7pm BST tomorrow night.
After the reveal pre-orders of physical copies, including a limited edition, will be available via publisher Strictly Limited.
