When you aren’t desperately trying to avoid the love-doted eyes of Rottie, or trying to uncover information on your missing sister, Death end re;Quest 2 has you duking it out with all manner of gribblies. Combat is the meat to the narrative’s potatoes, and getting to grips with it is a must.

Whether you want to know how to smack an enemy like a rag doll, learn new skills, or deal maximum damage, this guide has you covered. Having a big stick will get you far in Le Choara, but it won’t get you to the ending – well, not the ending you want at least.

The Triact System

The creatively named Triact System allows every character in your party to use three abilities whenever their turn on the initiative tracker comes up. What you do with these turns is up to you, but getting to grips with what works, and what doesn’t, is pretty mandatory.

Because you have three actions per turn across three characters, you are free to mix and match abilities to your heart's content. If you need to drop a quick heal, then move into a position where you can heal your comrades and still deal damage. Maybe you want to heal, buff, and attack – how about attacking three times, with three of the same ability? The choice is ultimately yours.

One thing to bear in mind is that enemies can also use this system. In regular encounters, don’t get hung up on fancy buffs – just hit the enemy really hard. If you can wipe a team out before they can retaliate, you will save yourself a lot of hassle.

Knockback, Super Knockback, and Knock Blow

One of the earliest skills you will learn is Knockback. Many skills come with the ability to Knockback, as depicted in their description, but using it well takes a bit of practice. In the best-case scenario, you will end every combo with a Knockback skill. This will launch any enemies unfortunate enough to get in your way in a designated direction.

This not only racks up significantly more damage, but it will also result in chain reactions where enemies will collide with other enemies, walls, and even allies. These chain reactions, as is to be expected, further increase the damage of your combo, shortening each combat significantly.

Many things in Death end re;Quest 2 are random, but one that isn’t – despite what you may initially think – is Super Knockbacks. These hyper-powered Knockbacks launch enemies way further, deal more damage, and are signified by the flame trails that erupt from your target's derrière. To pull one off, all you have to do is hit the confirm button right as your character is about to land their Knockback attack, and boom, you will score a metaphoric homerun.

The final piece of the physics-defying pie is the Knock Blow. A Knock Blow is performed when an enemy comes into contact with a yeeted enemy. This will cause a small cutscene to play that ends with the offending enemy being launched once again. Ideally, you want to make sure you are aiming your Knockbacks towards allies and enemies to maximize the number of ricochets.

To better control your aim you can use your d-pad to slowly move your targeting reticule and line up the perfect shot. The best way to do this is to queue up a bunch of attacks, run around with your effect radius on-screen, plonk yourself near to where you want to be, then slowly adjust your aim. You can pull off some amazing bounces once you start to use precision aiming.

Understanding The Flash System

One major aspect of Death end re;Quest 2’s combat system is the Flash Skill System – it’s also one of the least explained. What this system does is unlock new skills based on which skills you mix into your combos. This is portrayed as a highly experimental system that requires deep combo building to fully utilize – but this isn’t the case.

The vast majority of Flash Skill gains are generated from simply using the required skill. Not all skills generate a Flash Skill, but many do. The downside is that it’s completely random when a skill will generate its Flash Skill. It’s all under-the-hood percentages, and for the most part, you can just spam the same move over, and over again until it unlocks.

This might sound tedious, and that’s because it is. Thankfully, most Flash Skills unlock without much hassle – sometimes the first time you use an eligible skill. Despite the humdrum nature of RNG, you will want to engage with this system constantly. Many Flashy Skills are upgrades to pre-existing skills, so getting them early will greatly increase your damage output.

Not only that, but Flash Skills can also be powerful support abilities, such as improved healing, revives, and party-wide buffs. Having access to these skills only expands each character's toolkit, which opens up new ways to overcome difficult challenges.

Stats And What They All Mean

Stats in Death end re;Quest 2 are not explained. You can’t hover over them in the main menu, and there are no tooltips or popups explaining what they do. They are self-explanatory to a degree, but here’s the breakdown

SPThese represent your Skill Points. Skill Points are spent to use Skills in (and out) of combat
ATKThis is your Attack stat. This governs how much damage you do with Physical attacks
DEFThis is your Defense stat. This determines how resilient you are to Physical damage
MATThis is your Magic Attack stat. This governs how much damage you do with Magical attacks
MDEFThis is your Magic Defense stat. This determines how resilient you are to Magical damage
AGIThis is your Agility stat. This determines your placement on the Initiative Tracker. In addition, AGI increases your accuracy and critical hit chance.

Understanding Bugs

Bugs are glowing spots that crop up around the combat arena. Bugs play a big role in Death end re;Quest 2, and interacting with them will greatly increase your efficacy in combat. Each Bug has a unique effect, and collecting that bug will apply that effect. This could be an increase to your ATK, or a quick burst of damage – kind of like a mine.

There are a few ways to collect Bugs, but the big two are walking over them, and smacking enemies through them with Knockback attacks. In either instance, you will gain the effect of the Bug. An added benefit to breaking Bugs with an enemy's body is a slight increase to your EXP and your Eni reward once combat has concluded.

Because many Bugs are beneficial to your health, resources, and growth, you want to try and break as many as you can in each battle.

Whilst it’s not immediately obvious what each Bug does, you can enter ‘Search’ mode and hover over any Bug to check. Bugs are color-coded too, so you don’t have to check every Bug in every arena.

Corruption And Glitching

Another element of combat that's linked to Bugs is Corruption. Corruption is gained whenever a character directly walks over a Bug. Corruption sounds bad, but, in reality, it’s a massive boon. Your Corruption stat is marked by a percentage tracker near your character's portrait, and once that number hits 80 percent, you enter Glitch Mode.

Glitch Mode is a superstate that increases your ATK & MAT by 100 percent, and your DEF & MDEF by 50 percent. This is a major boost to your stats, and can quickly turn the tide of a battle. The downside to this form is that it drains Corruption every turn. If your Corruption falls below 80 percent, you are returned to normal and your gauge reset to zero.

Corruption will follow you between battles, so it is highly advised to keep a decent stock of Corruption ready for boss battles so you can brawl at peak effectiveness. This is easier said than done, however. This is because taking damage will also generate Corruption. It’s very easy to get pushed over that Corruption threshold and burn your Glitch mode if you fail to wipe an enemy party in one turn.

The final advantage to Glitch mode, and the gathering of Corruption, is access to a character's ultimate skill – the Glitch Attack. These skills can only be performed at the end of a full Triact combo, and they are incredibly powerful. Mia’s, for example, is a 14-hit combo in-and-of-itself and grants her temporary invulnerability. Glitch Attacks are serious business. The only downside is you are ejected from Glitch Mode once you use this attack – so time it carefully in longer engagements.

Equipment Is More Important Than Levels

Finding, buying, and equipping new gear is the easiest way to gain power in Death end re;Quest 2. Leveling up will give you small increases each time, whilst a new weapon could double your ATK stat in an instant, or provide you with enough defense to tank a nuke.

Loads of powerful items can be found scattered around Le Choara, and many of these will take hours to replace. Even your first found weapon can turn you from a wet noodle into an unstoppable god for a good few hours. Always be on the lookout for new loot.

Elements

Elements in Death end re;Quest 2 are represented by a simple ‘rock, paper, scissors' system, and every enemy, attack, and character is subject to them. These take the form of the Sun, Moon, and Star. In short, the system looks like this: Moon>Sun>Star>Moon.

You can use the Search function to uncover an enemy's Element, as well as your own, whilst your skills will tell you their Element in their description. Bear in mind that a character's element does not change what skills they can learn. Most characters can learn skills from every element – they are just vulnerable to specific elements.
