EA’s trick for convincing you to buy a more expensive version of FIFA 21 seems to be to make the cover art of the standard version as disgusting as possible.
PSG superstar and France World Cup winner Kylian Mbappé is the cover athlete for this year’s FIFA, although his new claim to fame is somewhat overshadowed by what else is on the covers of the game.
The standard edition looks like the budget re-release of the Mega Drive version more than a new, modern game and is bafflingly ugly. The Champions Edition doesn’t look much better and has the same Photoshop-has-only-just-been-invented 90s vibe.
The Ultimate Edition is a bit classier but of course it’s the most expensive version. The prices haven’t been announced yet but the FIFA 20 version cost £89.99.
Mbappé still seems chuffed at the recognition though, and has spoken often about his love for FIFA – which is where his famous crossed arms celebration comes from.
‘Being on the cover of FIFA is a dream come true. From my time at Bondy to Clairefontaine to the World Cup, this marks another big milestone’, said Mbappé.
‘I’ve been playing this game since I was a kid and I am honoured to represent a whole new generation of footballers and be in the same group as many other amazing footballers who I now share this honour with.’
You’ll notice the box art is for the PlayStation 4 version, which suggests that Sony is still the main marketing partner for FIFA – which puts the kibosh on rumours that EA might team up with Microsoft this year.
Even if that doesn’t happen though a gameplay reveal is expected tomorrow from 4pm, during the pre-show warm-up of the Xbox Games Showcase.
FIFA 21 will be released on 9 October for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Although if you buy anything other than the standard edition you can get access from 6 October.
There will be Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 versions as well, although since the consoles won’t be released until probably November it’s unclear when exactly they’ll be out.
