Forspoken has been delayed. Originally set for release on May 25, developer Luminous Productions has delayed Forspoken to later this fall.
"We have made the difficult decision to move the release date of Forspoken to October 11, 2022," wrote Luminous in a statement published to Twitter. "Our vision for this exciting new IP is to deliver a game world and hero that gamers across the globe will want to experience for years to come, so getting it right is extremely important to us. To that end, during the next few months we will focus all of our efforts on polishing the game and can't wait for you to experience Frey's journey this fall."
The delay isn't too surprising for those following Forspoken's development. Our own Jade King noted in her preview that Forspoken "could be truly special, but right now I’m not so sure," noting the homogenous grey/brown environments of Athia. And while the main character's magical abilities are certainly cool, they're nothing we haven't seen in other action titles.
Forspoken was first announced last year in a trailer that was an impressive tech demo but gave little information of the game's story. Since then, we've found out the game's story will center around Frey Holland, a New York teen transported to the magical land of Athia. There, she gains magic powers which she'll use to both overthrow a tyrannical government and possibly find a way back home.
The story was written by Gary Whitta (Rogue One, The Book of Eli), and Amy Hennig of Naughty Dog's Uncharted series. The combination of Western writers and the same developers who created Final Fantasy 15 was certainly intriguing, but so far the story seems somewhat generic by modern standards.
Hopefully, Luminous will be able to use these extra months to polish Forspoken’s environments and stories to be a truly compelling game. Forspoken will arrive on PS5 and PC on October 11.
