One of the most mysterious upcoming products on Magic: The Gathering’s line-up is Jumpstart 2022. Announced at last year’s showcase along with now-released sets like Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty and Double Masters 2022, we’ve heard absolutely nothing about this follow-up to 2020’s hugely popular set.
Many began to suspect that maybe it had been cancelled or delayed out of the year it’s named after, facing a similar fate to the original and its unfortunate mid-lockdown launch. Fortunately, Wizards has confirmed it’s actually one of the final releases of the entire year; Jumpstart 2022 will be launching on December 2.
In the July 21 instalment of Weekly MTG, senior communications manager Blake Rasmussen confirmed that we’ll be seeing the set later this year, and even showed off booster packs for it. Though the images don’t give too much away, it does confirm that each 20-card pack will include at least one “anime-inspired” card, bringing back the art treatment we last saw at the start of the year in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty.
Like the original Jumpstart, Jumpstart 2022 is aimed at being a beginner-friendly limited format. Each booster pack includes half of a themed deck – such as the first set’s Dogs, Goblins, Mill, or Planeswalkers – and you’re tasked with shuffling two random packs together and trying to win with the outcome.
Despite being made for beginners, Jumpstart proved a big hit with enfranchised players as well. On top of it including powerful reprints like Cathar’s Crusade and Rhystic Study, it was a limited format that didn’t have the hassle of drafting or playing sealed – you bash two packs together and off you go. Unfortunately, the first Jumpstart launched at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the odd decision to pull Jumpstart from Magic: The Gathering Arena shortly after launch meant many people didn’t get the chance to experience it until much later.
Even though Jumpstart 2022 is launching at almost the last possible moment, this year is proving to be a big one for the format. On top of Arena’s excellent Jump In! format, September’s Dominaria United is replacing Theme boosters with new Jumpstart boosters. These contain ten different themes based on Dominaria United’s draft archetypes, and is designed to be compatible with the other ranges of Jumpstart packs launching alongside Brothers’ War and in Jumpstart 2022.
