PS5 stock shortages could be a thing of the past, as Sony explores a possible console redesign.
Despite only launching late last year, PlayStation 5 stock issues have led to Sony re-thinking the design of the next-gen console.
The redesigned PS5 will reportedly enter production in 2022, complete with a semi-customised CPU from AMD.
“It says the next PS5 will come with a “new semi-customized” 6nm CPU from AMD,” reads a Dr. Serkan Toto tweet. “5nm is said to be too costly.”
Not only would the redesign make it cheaper for Sony to produce the PS5, but it should help to reduce stock shortages.
However, fans who have already purchased a PS5 needn’t be too worried about the new iteration, as it’s unlikely to contain any major new features.
The bad news, of course, is that PS5 stock shortages are likely to continue until production begins on the redesign.
Stock issues were a big problem in April, when hardly any consoles went on sale in the UK. This was due to shipping and delivery problems.
The console should be back in a big way next week, as retailers such as Argos, GAME, Currys, John Lewis and Amazon all get ready for a restock.
Despite the longer wait for stock to become available in stores, the good news is that the stock drops should be rather large.
This is because the delayed April stock should be available at the same time as the May drop.
According to the latest PS5 UK Stock Alerts tweet, Argos has digital and regular PS5 consoles ready for sale, although the stock drop isn’t likely to happen until 1.30am BST on May 11.
“Exclusive: Argos stores now showing stock for Digital consoles as well as Disc. There’s a lot less of them though,” reads a PS5 UK Stock Alerts tweet.
“Argos skipped this morning so the next likely drop will be Tuesday at approx 1:30am.”
John Lewis has received PS5 units ready for next week’s big restock.
PS5: Sony unveil pricing for PlayStation 5 console
If you do manage to pick up a PS5 during the next round of restocks, then it’s worth checking out new PlayStation 5 exclusive Returnal.
Developed by the studio responsible for the likes of Resogun and Nex Machina, Returnal is a roguelike shooter with bullet hell sensibilities.
“After crash-landing on a shape-shifting alien planet, Selene finds herself fighting tooth and nail for survival. Again and again she’s defeated, forced to restart her journey every time she dies.
“In this roguelike shooter, both the planet and your equipment change with every cycle, forcing you to adapt your play style and take on evolving challenges.”
Alternatively, you could grab a copy of Resident Evil Village, which sees the action shift to an Eastern European village populated by werewolves and other monsters.
