Those that prefer performance over visuals will be happy to learn that the upcoming PS5 sequel Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will offer a 60 fps playback mode. In an interview with Famitsu magazine, developer Insomniac Games confirmed the mode alongside some extra details about the game’s output resolution. Those that opt for quality will get a native 4K resolution with 30 fps playback while the performance mode doubles the framerate and lowers the resolution.
As well as information about performance metrics, Insomniac detailed how Rift Apart will be making extensive use of Sony’s new SSD technology. Ratchet’s forthcoming adventure will feature next to no load times as he jumps between different dimensions. It’s a feat that was completely impossible on the previous generation of consoles and is something Insomniac hopes to exploit to its fullest potential.
One of the PS5 controller’s unique features, haptic triggers, will not be getting utilized in Rift Apart. Insomniac Games’ Mike Daily states that he didn’t want to break the mold of traditional control schemes too much. Players will get a taste of the haptic rumble, which increases in intensity the closer you get to explosions and such, but you won’t experience anything gimmicky like the triggers locking up or moving on their own.
There’s not a whole lot of new information in this interview, but it’s nice to know that fans of the PS2 era of Ratchet & Clank will feel more at home. The PS4 reboot was a decent foundation to build new games off of, but it felt sluggish to play and was something of a disappointment. Going back to the speed of the originals makes me more eager to see what Sony and Insomniac have in store.
