Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne HD: Difficulty Guide

Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne HD Remaster is an enhanced version of the PlayStation 2 classic. Many gamers are more familiar with Persona, the spin-off series of Shin Megami, but the two have a lot in common. One thing that players of both will likely agree on is that the Shin Megami games are considerably more difficult to complete, with Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne being one of the more notorious.

However, when it comes to the Remaster, Atlus has been a bit more forgiving towards players and has included a Merciful difficulty setting that is available as free DLC. This means that there are three different difficulty options to choose from, and we have a breakdown of how each one affects the game right here.

How to Change Difficulty And The Different Modes

You can choose which difficulty mode you wish to use whenever you start a new game. Additionally, if you regret your choice, you can change the difficulty at any time from the Config menu.

Merciful Difficulty

This is available as free DLC for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC. This difficulty allows players to focus more on the story, offering easier battles and quicker progression for leveling and farming money.

  • Player damage is increased.
  • Enemies are encountered less often and don’t use special skills as often in battle.
  • Experience points and Macca (money) earned after each battle is increased.

Normal Difficulty

This is the standard difficulty that offers balanced gameplay for players. Normal difficulty offers default values for damage dealt, encounters, rewards, and item prices.

Hard Difficulty

This difficulty is for players who want a challenge, as not only will battles be harder to win due to smarter and more powerful enemies, but you’ll likely be carrying fewer medicinal items due to their higher cost.

  • Enemy damage is increased.
  • Enemies will use special skills more often and take advantage of player weaknesses.
  • Items are more expensive to buy.
