I don’t know about you, but I’ve got a selection of virtual reality games that I like to use when showcasing the technology to newbies.
On PSVR it’s swimming with sharks in PlayStation VR Worlds (and Resident Evil’s horrifying Kitchen demo if they can handle it), while Ritchie’s Plank Experience is my go-to app for Oculus Quest virgins.
While these hugely entertaining apps are perfect for showcasing the power of virtual reality, none of them have much long-term appeal for day-to-day players.
The Climb 2 is another app that’s great for showing off the platform to other people. The difference, however, is that The Climb 2 is a virtual reality showcase with a bit more substance.
It’s also an absolutely terrifying experience, and I mean that in the very best sense of the word.
If you played the original Climb (and you definitely should), then you’ll feel right at home with the sequel, which doesn’t stray too far from its roots.
The aim of the game is to climb to the top of the 15 different different locations on offer, which in this case are split between five different biomes – Alps, Bay, Canyon, City, and North.
Thanks to the excellent Oculus Move Controllers, the climbing itself is highly intuitive, although figuring out the best route, managing stamina and overcoming various obstacles makes for a surprisingly challenging experience.
Mastering advanced techniques and trying different routes is key to climbing the leaderboards (pun intended), which in turn will keep you coming back for more.
Alternatively, you can turn off the stamina system, bypass the level unlock requirements, and simply climb any stage you please in order to take in the stunning scenery.
And make no mistake about it, The Climb 2 may not be as sharp or as detailed as some of the big-budget PC VR titles, but it’s still a great looking game.
Nothing highlights this better than the inspired city stages, which are a new addition for The Climb 2. Think Ritchie’s Plank Experience, only with more climbing.
While all of The Climb 2’s stages are terrifying in their own way, there’s something about scrabbling up the side of a skyscraper that will make your palms sweat and legs wobble. Just remember to keep telling yourself that it’s not real!
The city levels also feature some of the game’s brand new moving platforms, which swing and shuffle as you grab on. The moving platforms add a sense of weight and presence to levels and make them feel a bit more ‘real’.
Though not on the same level as something like FitXR, The Climb 2 is also a surprisingly demanding game, or at least it is based on how I play it.
You’ll squeeze those triggers like your life depends on it, all the while tensing your core and waving your arms around like a maniac. Reaching the summit without plummeting to your death is thrilling, satisfying and just a little bit exhausting.
Conversely, there’s also a zen-like sense of peace and pride when you’re standing on the highest platform and surveying the land below.
An exhilarating experience that highlights the unique power of virtual reality, The Climb 2 is a VR showpiece with plenty of substance. Add it to your wishlists today!
