The reboot of Yakuza will be a next gen Xbox exclusive but a PS5 version will be coming out eventually.

If there’s one thing Microsoft has never managed to get right with the Xbox it’s support from Japan, which has always been next to non-existent. They’re promising to do better next generation though and one of their first high profile announcements has been new game Yakuza: Like A Dragon.

The original PlayStation 4 version, which has been out in Japan since January, will be released as normal but the next gen version will be a timed exclusive for Xbox Series X, alongside new Xbox One and PC editions.

A PlayStation 5 version will eventually be released but not this year. Which will likely upset some fans, as up until recently the series has been a PlayStation exclusive.

The Western version of the game will feature English voiceovers (not all the games have), including Star Trek’s George Takei as a Yakuza boss.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon will be the first mainline game not to have Kazuma Kiryu as the protagonist and will instead focus on new character Ichiban Kasuga. It will also feature turn-based combat instead of the usual real-time action, which is a major change for the series.

Sega has made a point of confirming the Western release date only as ‘November’ but it’s listed as 13 November on the Xbox Store (12 November in the US), which is… interesting.

It wouldn’t be completely silly to imagine that’s the launch date of the Xbox Series X itself, since it would certainly be somewhere around that time.

But the fact that the game is also coming out on Xbox One and PC muddies the water and at the moment at least the listing only refers to those formats.
