While easily missed considering how much other information was crammed in, there was indeed a brief Fantastic Four tease at the end of Marvel’s new sizzle reel.
The pandemic has resulted in Marvel fans having to go the longest they have had to go without an MCU movie since the saga began with Iron Man in 2008. However, on July 9, 2021, that prolonged wait comes to an end when Black Widow hits Disney Plus and theaters at the same time. As was showcased via a sizzle reel on Monday, the action will be coming thick and fast once Marvel is able to get back to it.
While the first half of the trailer looks back at what the MCU has done so far, the second half revealed a lot of new information about what’s next. Release dates for the MCU’s next ten movies were revealed, from Black Widow two months from now all the way up until Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 two years and one day from now on May 5, 2023.
However, even after the titles and release dates of those ten movies were done flying up on the screen, Marvel still had one more pretty special tease. A bright blue number four. Since Black Widow will officially kick off the fourth phase of the MCU, some watching might have assumed that’s what the number signified. It’s actually the same four used by the Fantastic Four, reminding Marvel fans that the team will be joining the MCU.
This isn’t a reveal that the Fantastic Four are coming. That was already known, and Spider-Man director Jon Watts is rumored to be attached to the project. Nevertheless, the use of the logo in the official Marvel hype video is still an exciting step forward. The only downside is Fantastic Four fans will have to wait until the second half of 2023, at least, to see how the MCU spins the superhero team.
Previous attempts at bringing the Fantastic Four to the big screen have fallen flat. One movie in 2005, and then another crack at that project in 2015. Maybe Marvel will wait for the next year ending in five before releasing the MCU’s Fantastic Four movie. Or April 4, 2024. That would be a neat and satisfying marketing target if the date is available and the movie’s creators are willing to wait that long.
