A Harry Potter video game — an “open-world re-creation of Hogwarts and its surrounding areas” — is “on track” for a 2021 release date, according to a Bloomberg report. Early footage of the game leaked in 2018 is authentic, Bloomberg said.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s Avalanche Software, the Utah-based studio behind the Disney Infinity series, is developing the Harry Potter game for multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, according to Bloomberg. Players will reportedly “role-play as wizards.” Warner Bros. has not publicly confirmed the game’s development, but will reportedly reveal it after the DC FanDome event in August.
Warner Bros. has not responded to Polygon’s request for comment.
Bloomberg reported that Avalanche Software management has not addressed Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling’s recent transphobic statements, which reportedly “made some members of the team uncomfortable.”
In early June, CNBC reported that AT&T was interested in selling off its Warner Bros. gaming division. According to that report, Take-Two Interactive, Electronic Arts, and Activision Blizzard were all interested in buying the portion of the company. Bloomberg said that neither Rowling’s statements nor the potential sale have impacted the game’s release schedule.
